Kudos is highlighting DLR's AIAA conference paper "Flight Tests with an Indirect Ice Detection System" (Falk Sachs, Carsten Schwarz, Christoph Deiler). The paper details the SENS4ICE novel approach of hybridization of different detection techniques. Direct sensing of atmospheric conditions and/or ice accretion on the airframe is combined with an indirect detection of ice accretion on the airframe by monitoring the change of aircraft’s characteristics. Particularly SLD (Supercooled Large Droplet) icing conditions can have an impact on flight safety and are relevant for aircraft certification. Falk Sachs (DLR): "Working on the subject described was a pleasure, since we were able to show that the approach performed as we intended. We are glad that we could do this research in close collaboration with industry partners motivated to set up and to test the system for future application and industrialization."
