The French facility for airborne research SAFIRE has released the data recordings of the European SENS4ICE natural icing flight campaign (https://safireplus.aeris-data.fr/data-access).

The campaign was conducted with SAFIRE's specially instrumented ATR 42 research aircraft in April 2023. The campaign aimed at measuring liquid water icing conditions and in particular supercooled large droplet (SLD) conditions.

In total, 15 flights with a total of about 50 flight hours have been successfully conducted collecting icing data. Several novel ice detection technologies were flight tested and extensive atmospheric reference measurement data was acquired. The data will provide a valuable basis for the validation of icing forecast products, sensor evaluation and satellite nowcasting products as part of the SENS4ICE project and beyond.

Initial preliminary results will be presented at the SAE International Conference on Icing of Aircraft, Engines, and Structures 2023, 20-22 June 2023, Vienna, Austria and furthermore at the SENS4ICE Final Public Dissemination Event, 29 November 2023, Brussels, Belgium.
